Abstract

The main objective was to evaluate growth performance, biochemical composition, nutrient utilization, and survival of Nile tilapia using different dietary levels of garlic powder in two 30-day bioassays. Bioassay 1: 84 juvenile tilapias were fed on diets with 317 g/kg of protein and a P/E ratio of 16.7 g/MJ containing levels of 0, 10, 20, and 30 g/kg of garlic meal. Bioassay 2: 96 pre-adult tilapias were assigned the diets from the first bioassay with a similar experimental design to evaluate zootechnical parameters and feed utilization in both trials. Additionally, the second bioassay determined the energetic, protein and lipid composition of the fillet plus triglycerides and cholesterol. The three levels of inclusion did not have a significant effect on the zootechnical parameters, and the use of feed compared to the control (p > 0.05), and on the contrary, they did affect the energy, protein, and lipid composition, and triglyceride and cholesterol contents, especially at inclusion levels of 20 g/kg (p < 0.05). Dietary levels of 10, 20 and 30 g/kg of garlic powder do not affect the productive performance of tilapia, and they do modify the nutrient composition and the biochemical profile of the fillet.
