Essential oils and their constituents in coping with pathogenic bacteria

Abstract

Essential oils are small intercellular droplets, whose constituents are esters, alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, terpenes, terpenoids, ketones, acids, and aldehydes. Their potential as natural antimicrobials depend on the chemical composition of the oil, and the Gram+ and Gram- bacterial structures. Therefore, this review considers the chemical understanding of essential oils, and continues with the interpretation of the main bacterial structures. At the end, information is presented on the effect of essential oils on the assembly of lipids in the bacterial cell wall, ion leakage, denaturation of cellular proteins, escape of cytoplasmic material, alteration of the respiratory chain and finally lysis.
