SARS-CoV-2 in domiciliated dogs and cats in Mexico

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the potential factors of interest in the health of domiciliated cats and in Mexico in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were obtained from the website of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and subsequently a perception transversal study was carried out for people who had at least one dog or one cat in their home. From August 2020 to March 2021 in Mexico, all reported cases of COVID-19 in animals are attributed to dogs, where 55% are concentrated in Mexico City. The epidemiological study showed the perception that owners have when indicating if they believe that their pet can become ill with COVID-19 being exposed to an infected person. The adversities that the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of the epidemiology of zoonoses in the world and has reinforced the education of the population on basic hygienic and preventive measures that have been adopted in the last months.
