The aim of the study was to evaluate the cryoprotective effect of four types of sugars on the cryopreservation of Mexican hairless boar semen. Twenty ejaculates were collected from five sexually mature boars, which were mixed, diluted and cryopreserved in four different cryoprotective extenders: T1: glucose, T2: lactose, T3: fructose and T4: trehalose. The straws were thawed at 37 °C and motility parameters were evaluated with the CASA system, sperm viability (IP), mitochondrial activity (JC-1), acrosome integrity (FITC-PSA) and plasma membrane integrity in the tail (Host). Total motility (MT) and mean trajectory velocity (VAP) were higher (P <0.02) in T1 and T2, while the curvilinear velocity (VCL) was higher (P <0.05) in T1, the other variables associated with motility were similar (P> 0.10), as well as sperm viability and Host. Mitochondrial activity was higher (P <0.005) in T2 and T4. The integrity of the acrosome was greater (P <0.001) in T2 and T4. In conclusion, lactose proved to be the best extender for the cryopreservation of Mexican hairless boar semen.
