Seasonal effect of colostrum quality and calf weight on passive immunity transfer in bovine calves

Colostrum is a rich source of nutrients, particularly various immunological components that confer passive immunity to the neonate. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of bovine colostrum quality and calf weight during different seasons on the transfer of passive immunity in calves. For colostrum quality assessment, 2,744 multiparous Holstein cows were used, with concentrations of immunoglobulins (Ig) categorized as <20 mg/mL considered low, 20-50 mg/mL as medium, and 50-140 mg/mL as high quality, respectively. Regarding calf weights, animals were separated into those weighing less and those weighing more than 40 kg, respectively. Colostrum supplied to newborns was collected from the first postpartum milking; immediately after collection, it was pasteurized at a temperature of 60 °C for 60 minutes using a commercial pasteurizer. Results indicated an average colostrum quality of 78 mg/mL of Ig. The Ig concentration exceeded 50 g/L, categorizing it as good-quality colostrum. The average serum protein concentration in evaluated animals was 6.3 g/dL. Successful transfer of passive immunity was considered when serum protein exceeded 5.5 g/dL in all seasons; 90.2% of calves demonstrated successful transfer concentrations. It is concluded that the season and administration of high-quality colostrum promote the transfer of passive immunity.
