Bactericidal effect of clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum) against phytopathogenic bacteria

Abstract

Agricultural production is affected by abiotic and biotic factors that damage the quality and quantity of the harvest, generating a negative economic impact. Agrochemicals have been used to control biotic factors such as bacterial infections; however, their intensive use has negatively impacted both pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacterial populations and has even been associated with some human diseases and environmental damage. Due to this problem, alternatives with fewer negative effects are being sought. Essential oils and their secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial activity could be a viable alternative; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum) evaluated at concentrations of 0.156 to 20 mg/mL against Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and Xanthomonas campestris. Clove essential oil was tested against the three phytopathogens Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and Xanthomonas campestris to determine their Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), and the MBC/MIC ratio. The results demonstrate the antibacterial activity of clove essential oil against the three phytopathogens, with an MIC of 0.625 mg/mL against Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and 0.312 mg/mL against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and Xanthomonas campestris. The MBC was also found to be 0.625 mg/mL for Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and 0.312 mg/mL for Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and Xanthomonas campestris. The MBC/MIC ratio revealed a bactericidal effect. Clove essential oil is a potential antibacterial agent for agricultural use, and therefore, in situ evaluations are recommended.
