Abstract

Sheep production in Mexico has had a significant increase in recent years, with the central highlands area being the one with the largest sheep production and the most important in the marketing, mainly of meat and its by-products. The objective of this research was to typify and describe sheep production units to characterize the production environments and the sociocultural profile of the producers. The study was carried out through surveys made up of 103 productive variables applied to 81 sheep flocks in 28 municipalities of the State of Mexico. A multifactorial analysis of principal components was carried out to reveal the interrelationships between different variables that characterize the herds and a cluster analysis that allowed the strata of the production environments to be grouped. The results indicated that finally applying 49 variables, represented an important contribution to the variability of data (74.93%) that were integrated from 17 main components that made up 5 different levels or groupings of production units (P<0.05). The groupings showed different characteristics mainly in animal population, their production system, their genetic resources, as well as management in general such as reproductive, health control, feeding methods, animal welfare and marketing aspects of their products. The integration of the sheep production units into clusters through the environmental descriptors and through the methodology used in this study, allowed the characterization of the productive structures within the sheep sector in the State of Mexico.
