Population census of Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa in wild conditions in the state of Sonora

The state of Sonora is an important area of diversification derived from the geological and climatic complexity, which has generated the existence of different types of vegetation characteristic of the Sonoran Desert. Within this vegetation, there are CAM plants, which inhibit photorespiration, tolerate severe water stress, have decreased photosynthetic organs and a daytime stomatal closure, within these is Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, symbolizing the semi-arid and arid areas of northwestern Mexico. Due to the existence of few works related to the measurements of demographic attributes to know the current conditions of the populations of plants not evaluated, the objective of this work was to carry out a population census of Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa plants in their wild habitat. The existing population of cholla (C. acanthocarpa) was evaluated in two wild sites (S1 Campo Agricola "El Aguila" and S2 Rancho "Las Cruces"). To carry out the population census, an area was delimited for each evaluated site, considering a quadrant of 50x50 m per site, with a total area of 2500 m2 (each one) of active rangeland If the number of plants registered in each site and the studied area (2500 m2) are considered, in S1 one plant could be located in each 3.64 m2 and in S2 it would be every 3.37 m2.When carrying out the study it was obtained that for S1 there were 464 plants, while in S2 685 plants were counted, showing a difference of 221 plants, yielding 32.26% in in S2 more than in S1. Therefore, the populations of C. acanthocarpa cannot be considered to be low, but lower than expected. During the monitoring, no pests or diseases were observed that affect the populations of the plants evaluated on the sites.
