				<title>Resumen:</title>
				<p>La leptospirosis equina ha sido asociada con abortos, insuficiencia renal y uveítis, lo cual constituye un problema de salud y económico, sin embargo, de manera general es asintomática, lo cual provoca que dicha enfermedad sea de poco interés en equinos en comparación con otras especies domésticas y silvestres. En la actualidad la situación epidemiológica real de leptospirosis en equinos se desconoce; al igual que la enfermedad se desarrolla en estos animales. Se realizó una búsqueda de literatura científica; con el objetivo de conocer cuáles son las serovariedades del género leptospira reportadas en equinos desde 2010 a 2020. En la revisión de literatura se seleccionaron 21 artículos, en los cuales se identificó que <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic>, es la que se reportó con mayor frecuencia (11.43%, IC95%: 6-19.1%), seguida por <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> (9.52%, IC95%: 4.6-16.8%).</p>

			<title>INTRODUCCIÓN</title>
			<p>La leptospirosis descrita en 1886 por el médico alemán Adolph Weil, es en la actualidad una de las enfermedades infecciosas de tipo zoonótico de más amplia distribución a nivel mundial, es causada por bacterias del género <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Adler y de la Peña, 2010</xref>). La frecuencia de leptospirosis suele asociarse con mala higiene por lo que su presencia es más frecuente en regiones donde son comunes las actividades como la agricultura, la manufactura de productos de origen animal, la silvicultura, la ganadería, la minería, etcétera (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Torres <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>).</p>
			<p>Esta enfermedad tiene relevancia para la salud pública y animal, debido a la participación de hospederos naturales y accidentales, los cuales son importantes para su mantenimiento. Los roedores son considerados los principales hospederos, además de los bovinos, equinos, cerdos, ovejas, cabras, perros y gatos; así como mamíferos silvestres (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Andersen <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>). Algunos de éstos cumplen la función de portadores, los cuales pueden ser capaces de eliminar a la bacteria mediante la orina como lo hacen los individuos enfermos, sin presentar signos clínicos detectables (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Wood <italic>et al</italic>., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ellis, 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Moral <italic>et al</italic>., 2014</xref>).</p>
			<p>En los equinos, la leptospirosis se asocia de manera común con enfermedades genitourinarias y oftálmicas en las cuales se pueden apreciar daños hacia la placenta y el feto, los riñones y los ojos. Por lo general, el cuadro clínico es de carácter leve o subclínico; sin embargo, en la forma aguda se presenta depresión, ictericia, pirexia, mientras que en infecciones graves se observan abortos, enfermedades neonatales o el nacimiento de un potro sano con anticuerpos contra esta bacteria. En algunos casos se presenta mortalidad perinatal, además de trastornos respiratorios y cuadros de uveítis recurrente (ERU) o iridociclitis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Divers, <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Arent y Kedzierska-Mięszkowska, 2013</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Verma <italic>et al.</italic>, 2010</xref>).</p>
			<p>Los equinos se infectan al consumir agua contaminada con leptospiras; de igual forma como cualquier especie al entrar en contacto con la orina u otros fluidos de animales infectados. Estas bacterias tienen la capacidad de entrar al organismo a través de las mucosas, abrasiones en piel y por vía transplacentaria, para de manera posterior puedan alojarse principalmente en los túbulos renales de los animales, en donde se encuentran colonizando (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Khalili <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>).</p>
			<p>De manera posterior, las bacterias son eliminadas por la orina, contaminan los ríos, lagos y demás fuentes hídricas que son utilizadas para actividades destinadas al comercio, agricultura, ganadería, incluido para el consumo del ser humano, de esta manera se facilita la infección en humanos y animales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Pulido <italic>et al</italic>., 2014</xref>). En ciertas ocasiones algunos productos, tejidos y fluidos de estos animales pueden actuar como una fuente de infección.</p>
			<p>
				<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>. (2013)</xref>, propone otra vía no convencional de transmisión de la enfermedad, mediante el contagio sexual, debido a que encontró la presencia de ADN, de <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> en semen equino, en el 50% de muestras evaluadas y frecuencia de 60% para <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> y <italic>Leptospira copenhageni</italic>. Cabe mencionar que, aunque la exposición a leptospira es común, el desarrollo de la enfermedad en equinos se presenta en raras ocasiones (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Malalana, 2019</xref>).</p>
			<p>En la actualidad no se conoce con exactitud si las condiciones en el riñón del caballo alteran las funciones fisiológicas de la bacteria y, por lo tanto, afectan su supervivencia, generan reducción de su patogenia, o si existen diferencias en la infección entre machos y hembras (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>., 2012</xref>a).Sin embargo, mediante estudios histopatológicos en riñones de caballos jóvenes, se ha logrado observar la formación de petequias e infiltración linfocítica en los túbulos proximales y glomérulos. También se ha reportado que la serovariedad <italic>Pomona</italic>, al alojarse en dichos órganos ocasiona fiebre e insuficiencia renal aguda (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Verma <italic>et al</italic>., 2010</xref>).</p>
			<p>El objetivo de esta revisión de literatura fue conocer la frecuencia de la leptospirosis en equinos reportada en la literatura de los últimos 10 años.</p>
		</sec>
		<sec sec-type="methods">
			<title>METODOLOGÍA</title>
			<p>Se realizó una revisión en buscadores web como Pubmed, Science direct, Scielo, de la literatura científica arbitrada y publicada en los últimos 10 años (2010-2020), se utilizaron las palabras clave: frecuencia, equinos, <italic>Leptospira spp</italic>, leptospirosis, infección, diagnóstico, uveítis y la combinación de éstas.</p>
			<p>Se obtuvieron de los artículos consultados los reportes de serovariedad, país y continente; con base en lo anterior, se calculó la frecuencia general de los animales positivos y la frecuencia de las serovariedades.</p>
			<p>Después se utilizó el programa EpiInfo 7® para analizar los datos, conocer las frecuencias e intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC 95%) de la información obtenida de los artículos revisados (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">CDC, 2016</xref>).</p>
		</sec>
		<sec sec-type="results">
			<title>RESULTADOS</title>
			<p>En una muestra representativa de 21 artículos, en donde se detectó alguna serovariedad de <italic>Leptospira</italic> en 7218 caballos (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t1">Tabla 1</xref>). En estos se encontraron 40 serovariedades (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">Tabla 2</xref>) siendo la <italic>Leptospira Bratislava</italic> la que se reporta con mayor frecuencia con 11.43% (IC95%: 6-19.1%), seguida por <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> con 9.52%, (IC95%: 4.6-16.8%); lo cual sugiere que estas serovariedades reportadas son las que más se encuentran en contacto con equinos.</p>

			<title>DISCUSIÓN</title>
			<p>El conocer el verdadero valor de la frecuencia de <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> a partir de los artículos revisados es muy complicado, de ahí se calculó un intervalo de confianza para poder ubicar con una probabilidad del 95%, un rango de valores entre los cuales se localizará el verdadero valor de la frecuencia de este agente en la población equina (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Molina, 2013</xref>). En este estudio se identificaron 40 serovariedades de <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> en caballos. A pesar de que la <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> es la que más se ha reportado en la literatura de equinos en los últimos 10 años (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pinna <italic>et al</italic>., 2014</xref>), la <italic>Leptospira pomona</italic> es la que se considera como el agente específico para los équidos, puesto que cuando el individuo desarrolla la enfermedad, se pueden encontrar títulos elevados de anticuerpos contra esta última (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Divers <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>).</p>
			<p>En los estudios serológicos en equinos se ha identificado que existe variación en la frecuencia de infección por <italic>Leptospira</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>., 2014b</xref>); las cuales pueden presentarse en los 4 continentes reportados en la muestra del estudio sin embargo, las infecciones que más se reportaron en la literatura en equinos de los últimos 10 años fueron causadas por <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, Leptospira pomona, Leptospira bratislava, Leptospira copenhageni</italic> y <italic>Leptospira grippotyphosa.</italic> Estos datos se obtuvieron de acuerdo con lo reportado en los artículos revisados, derivado de estudios, tanto clínicos, serológicos y de ecología de la enfermedad, lo cual ha permitido conocer la interfaz entre animal-ambiente-humano y su importancia para el concepto de una sola salud (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Jaeger <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>). Por otra parte, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Bertelloni <italic>et al.</italic> (2019)</xref> mencionan que las características ambientales, como los humedales, estanques y canales presentes en el centro de Italia, asociadas con la presencia de animales domésticos y silvestres (estos últimos como reservorios de leptospiras) favorecen la diseminación de esta enfermedad, y se reportan frecuencias en cerdos de 19.74% y en bovinos de 13.03%. Se conoce que las leptospiras son transmitidas de manera eficiente a través del agua, pudiendo sobrevivir por periodos largos en ambientes húmedos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Lourerio <italic>et al</italic>., 2013</xref>). Por su parte, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Verma <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref> demostraron la existencia de la interacción entre el patógeno y los animales domésticos y silvestres, mediante los asentamientos de agua, así como la presencia de esta bacteria en los riñones de los animales silvestres. Se ha sugerido que la adaptación de la serovariedad al hospedero, así como, la cercana convivencia con el ganado con los caballos puede influir en la frecuencia de exposición (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Lowe, 2010</xref>). Como lo demuestran <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pinna <italic>et al</italic>. (2014)</xref><italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> está adaptada a los equinos, ya que esta se ha asociado con problemas reproductivos en yeguas. Sin embargo, <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> y <italic>Leptospira muenchen</italic>, se han asociado con casos de infecciones en cerdos, caballos, bovinos y perros, y logrado identificar cepas similares en animales silvestres (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Arent <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>).</p>
			<p>
				<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Witkswski <italic>et al</italic>. (2016) </xref>mencionan que las <italic>Leptospira grippotyphosa</italic> y <italic>Leptospira Pomona</italic> se asocian con casos de uveítis recurrentes en equinos. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hashimoto <italic>et al</italic>. (2007)</xref>evaluaron la prevalencia de leptospirosis en equinos sin sinología clínica aparente, y utilizaron la pérdida de peso y depresión como criterios de inclusión, con lo cual obtuvieron 66.88% de frecuencia general; de este valor, el 23.36% se representó por anticuerpos contra <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> y el 13.14% por <italic>Leptospira grippotyphosa.</italic> Mientras que <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>. (2012b)</xref> encontraron 89.5 de seroprevalencia en caballos asintomáticos.</p>
			<p>La gravedad de la enfermedad varía con la serovariedad y el animal afectado, cuando se presenta la enfermedad de manera subclínica, por lo general no se hace aparente el deterioro del animal; sin embargo, cuando la presencia de la enfermedad es de tipo crónico, son evidentes el deterioro físico y productivo de los animales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ellis, 2015</xref>).</p>
			<p><italic>Leptospira pomona kennewicki</italic> es considerada como la responsable de la mayoría de las presentaciones clínicas en caballos norteamericanos, se encuentra asociada con enfermedades de la placenta y el feto, los riñones y los ojos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Divers <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>); sin embargo, la presentación clínica puede resultar en aborto o en un potro enfermo. Esto se puede deber a la etapa gestacional de la yegua y al momento en el que ésta se infectó con la bacteria, así como su estado inmunológico (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Bernard, 1993</xref>). Desde el punto de vista clínico, un estudio realizado en Suecia demostró que no hay asociación significativa entre la presencia de signos clínicos de enfermedad y títulos positivos a <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> o <italic>Leptospira Icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> con excepción con la asociación entre problemas respiratorios y fatiga con la <italic>Leptospira Bratislava</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Båverud <italic>et al</italic>., 2009</xref>). Como es el caso de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Rocha (2004)</xref> en el cual mediante la obtención de muestras de riñón de caballo logró los aislamientos y tipificación por serología; en donde se determinó la presencia de cepas de <italic>Leptospira australis</italic> y <italic>Leptospira pomona</italic>, estas dos cepas son las que más se han reportado en caballos portugueses.</p>
			<p>Se ha asociado a la frecuencia de infección con <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> a las condiciones ambientales, incluidas las variaciones estacionales, como ejemplo se tiene que <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagie,</italic> se presentan con mayor frecuencia entre los meses de octubre y diciembre, esto atribuido a que los roedores suelen invadir los establos y casas a finales del verano y otoño. Por otro lado el incremento de la frecuencia <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> se presenta entre abril y junio y en octubre a diciembre (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Båverud <italic>et al</italic>., 2009</xref>). La leptospirosis es una zoonosis descuidada con distribución mundial, afecta muchas especies de mamíferos, incluyendo el ganado, provocando signos clínicos de carácter agudo en animales de todas las edades y etapas productivas, lo cual afecta de manera importante la producción animal. La incidencia anual de esta zoonosis en humanos no está bien determinada debido a la subnotificación, se estima como ejemplo en Uruguay que es de 15 por cada 100,000 habitantes. La enfermedad humana parece estar asociada el contacto con animales infectados, así como con las lluvias y las inundaciones en regiones endémicas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">Zarantonelli <italic>et al.,</italic> 2018</xref>).</p>
		</sec>
		<sec sec-type="conclusions">
			<title>CONCLUSIONES</title>
			<p>De manera general la literatura consultada permitió conocer la frecuencia de la enfermedad y las serovariedades encontradas en los caballos. La exposición a las diferentes serovariedades puede estar relacionada con la región en la que se encuentren los equinos, así como la presencia de uno o varios hospedadores específicos para estas serovariedades los cuales actúan como reservorio para que se presente la infección. Los caballos se infectan cuando consumen agua contaminada con alguna especie de <italic>Leptospira</italic>. Si bien la exposición a estos agentes es común en los caballos, la enfermedad sistémica es rara, los equinos pueden cursar de manera asintomática o presentar diferentes signos clínicos. Las especies de leptospiras reportadas de manera frecuente que pueden infectar a los caballos son, <italic>Leptospira bratislava,</italic> (11.43%, IC95%: 6-19.1%) y con la <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> (9.52%, IC95%: 4.6-16.8%). Es necesario considerar en futuros estudios la investigación del impacto de la leptospirosis animal en la salud pública, animal y ambiental, para poder implementar programas de prevención y control geográficamente específicos de esta enfermedad.</p>

				<article-title>Frequency of <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> serovars reported in horses: a literature review</article-title>

				<title>Abstract:</title>
				<p>Equine leptospirosis has been associated with abortions, renal failure and uveitis, which constitutes a health and economic problem. However, it is generally asymptomatic, which makes this disease of little interest in equines in comparison with other domestic and wild species. At present, the real epidemiological situation of leptospirosis in equines is unknown; just as the disease develops in these animals. A search of scientific literature was carried out; with the objective of knowing which are the serovars of genus leptospira reported in equines from 2010 to 2020. In the literature review, 21 articles were selected, in which it was identified that <italic>Leptospira bratislava,</italic> is the most frequently reported (11.43%, IC 95%: 6-19.1%) is in contact with equines, followed by <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> (9.52%, IC 95%: 4.6-16.8%).</p>

				<title>INTRODUCTION</title>
				<p>Leptospirosis described in 1886 by the German physician Adolph Weil, is currently one of the most widely distributed infectious diseases worldwide, bacteria of the genus <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Adler and de la Peña, 2010</xref>).</p>
				<p>The frequency of leptospirosis is usually associated with bad hygiene, so its presence is more frequent in regions where activities such as agriculture, the manufacture of products of animal origin, forestry, livestock, mining, etc (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Torres <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>).</p>
				<p>This disease has relevance for public and animal health, due to the participation of natural and accidental hosts, which are important for maintenance. Rodents are considered the main hosts, in addition to bovines, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs and cats; as well as wild mammals (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Andersen <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>). Some of these meet the function of carriers, which may be able to eliminate bacteria by urine as sick individuals do, without presenting detectable clinical signs (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Wood <italic>et al</italic>., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ellis, 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Moral <italic>et al</italic>., 2014</xref>).</p>
				<p>In equines, leptospirosis is commonly associated with genitourinary and ophthalmic diseases in which damage to placenta and fetus, kidneys and eyes can be appreciated. In general, the clinical picture is mild or subclinical; however, in the acute way, depression, jaundice, pyrexia, while in severe infections are observed abortions, neonatal diseases or the birth of a healthy pony with antibodies against this bacterium. In some cases, perinatal mortality is presented, as well as respiratory disorders and recurrent uveitis (ERU) or iridocyclitis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Divers, <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Arent and Kedzierska-Mięszkowska, 2013</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44"> Verma <italic>et al.</italic>,2010</xref>).</p>
				<p>Equines are infected when consuming water contaminated with leptospira; as well as any other species when in contact with urine or other fluids of infected animals. These bacteria have the ability to enter the body through mucous membranes, skin abrasions and transplacental route, so that later they can lodge mainly in the renal tubules of animals, where they are colonizing the kidney (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Khalili <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>).</p>
				<p>In later, bacteria are eliminated by urine, polluting rivers, lakes and other water sources that are used for activities aimed at trade, agriculture, livestock, included for the consumption of the human being, in this way the infection is facilitated in humans and animals (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Pulido <italic>et al</italic>., 2014</xref>). In certain occasions some products, fabrics and fluids of these animals can act as a source of infection.</p>
				<p>
					<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>. (2013)</xref>, it proposes another non-conventional path of disease transmission, through sexual contagion, because it found the presence of DNA, from <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> in equine semen, in 50% of evaluated samples and frequency of 60% for <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> and <italic>Leptospira Copenhageni</italic>. It is worth mentioning that, although exposure to leptospira is common, the development of equine disease occurs at rare occasions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Malalana, 2019</xref>).</p>
				<p>At present it is not accurately known whether the conditions in the horse kidney alter the physiological functions of the bacteria and, therefore, affect their survival, generate reduction of their pathogenesis, or if there are differences in infection between males and females (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>., 2012</xref>a). However, through histopathological studies in young horses’ kidneys, the formation of petechiae and lymphocytic infiltration in the proximal tubules and glomeruli has been observed. It has also been reported that <italic>Pomona</italic> serovar, in these organs causes fever and acute renal failure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Verma <italic>et al</italic>., 2010</xref>).</p>
				<p>The objective of this literature review was to know the frequency of leptospirosis in equines reported in the literature of the last 10 years.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="methods">
				<title>METHODOLOGY</title>
				<p>A review was carried out in web search browsers as PubMed, Science Direct, SciELO, from the scientific literature peer-reviewed and published in the last 10 years (2010-2020), the keywords used were frequency, equines, <italic>Leptospira spp</italic>, leptospirosis, infection, diagnosis, uveitis and combination of these.</p>
				<p>Reports of serovariety, country and continent were obtained from the articles consulted; based on this, the overall frequency of positive animals and the frequency of serovars were calculated.</p>
				<p>Then the EpiInfo 7® program was used to analyze the data, know the frequencies and 95% of confidence intervals (95% CI) of the information obtained from the scientific peer- reviewed articles (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">CDC, 2016</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="results">
				<title>RESULTS</title>
				<p>In a representative sample of 21 papers, where any serovar of leptospira was detected at 7218 horses (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 1</xref>). In these, 40 serovarieties were found (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t6">Table 2</xref>), being <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> the most frequently reported with 11.43% (IC 95%: 6-19.1%), followed by <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> with 9.52%, (IC 95%: 4.6-16.8% ; which suggests that these serovarieties reported are the ones that are in contact with equines.</p>

				<title>DISCUSSION</title>
				<p>Knowing the true value of the <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> frequency from the revised articles is very complicated, there was a confidence interval from there to be able to locate 95% with a range of values among which the real value of this agent frequency in the equine population (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Molina, 2013</xref>). In this study, 40 serovars of <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> in horses were identified. Although <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> has been the most commonly reported in the equine literature in the last 10 years (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pinna <italic>et al</italic>., 2014</xref>), <italic>Leptospira pomona</italic> is the one considered to be the specific agent for equidae, since when the individual develops the disease, high titers of antibodies against the latter can be found (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Divers <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>).</p>
				<p>In the serological studies in equines, there is identified that there is variation in the frequency of infection by <italic>Leptospira</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>., 2014b</xref>); which can be submitted on the four continents reported in the study sample. The most reported infections in the literature in equines of the last 10 years were caused by <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrahagiae</italic>, <italic>Leptospira pomona</italic>, <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic>, <italic>Leptospira</italic> copenhageni and <italic>Leptospira grippotyphosa</italic>. These data were obtained in accordance with the analyzed papers, derived from studies, both clinical, serological and ecology of the disease, which has allowed knowing the interface between animal-human environment and its importance for the concept of a one single health (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Jaeger <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>). On the other hand, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Bertelloni <italic>et al.</italic> (2019) </xref> mention that environmental characteristics, such as wetlands, ponds and channels present at the center of Italy, associated with the presence of domestic and wild animals (the latter as reservoirs of leptospiras) enhance the dissemination of this disease, and they are reported frequencies in pigs of 19.74% and bovines of 13.03%. It is known that leptospira are transmitted efficiently through water, being able to survive for long periods in humid environments (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Lourerio <italic>et al</italic>., 2013</xref>). For its part, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Verma <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref> showed the existence of the interaction between the pathogen and domestic and wild animals, through water settlements, as well as the bacterium presence in kidneys of wild animals. It has been suggested that the adaptation of serovar to the host, as well as, the nearby coexistence with cattle with horses can influence the frequency of exposure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Lowe,2010</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pinna <italic>et al</italic>. (2014)</xref> demonstrate that <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> is adapted to equines, since this has been associated with reproductive problems in mares. However, <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> and <italic>Leptospira muenchen</italic>, have been associated with cases of infections in pigs, horses, bovines and dogs, and managed to identify similar strains in wild animals (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Arent <italic>et al</italic>., 2016</xref>).</p>
				<p>
					<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Witkswski <italic>et al</italic>. (2016)</xref> mention that <italic>Leptospira grippotyphosa</italic> and <italic>Leptospira pomona</italic> are associated with cases of recurrent uveitis in equines. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hashimoto <italic>et al</italic>. (2007)</xref> evaluated the prevalence of leptospirosis in equines without apparent clinical synology, and used weight loss and depression as inclusion criteria, with which they obtained 66.88% of overall frequency; of this value, antibodies represented 23.36% against <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> and 13.14% by <italic>Leptospira grippotyphosa</italic>. While <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Hamond <italic>et al</italic>. (2012b)</xref> found 89.5 seroprevalence in asymptomatic horses.</p>
				<p>The disease severity varies with the serovar and the affected animal, when the disease is presented subclinically, animal deterioration is not apparent; however, when the presence of the disease is chronic, the physical and productive deterioration of animals are evident (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ellis, 2015</xref>).</p>
				<p><italic>Leptospira pomona kennewicki</italic> is considered as responsible for most clinical presentations in American horses, is associated with placenta diseases and fetus, kidneys and eyes ((<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Divers <italic>et al</italic>., 2019</xref>); however, clinical presentation can result in abortion or in a sick colt. This can be due to the gestational mare stage and at the time it was infected with the bacteria, as well as its immunological state (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Bernard, 1993</xref>). From the clinical point of view, a study conducted in Sweden showed that there is no significant association between the presence of clinical signs of disease and positive titles to <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> or <italic>Leptospira Icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> with exception with the association between respiratory problems and fatigue with the <italic>Leptospira Bratislava</italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Båverud <italic>et al</italic>., 2009</xref>). . Such is the case of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Rocha (2004)</xref> in which, by obtaining samples of horse kidneys, isolations and serological typing were achieved, where it determined the presence of <italic>Leptospira australis</italic> and <italic>Leptospira pomona</italic> strains, these two strains are the ones that have been most reported in Portuguese horses.</p>
				<p>It has been associated with the frequency of infection with <italic>Leptospira spp</italic> to environmental conditions, including seasonal variations, as an example has to be <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagie</italic> are presented more frequently between months of October and December, this attributed to the rodents usually invade the stables and houses at the end of summer and autumn. On the other hand, the increase in frequency <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic> is presented between April and June and October to December ( <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7"> Båverud <italic>et al</italic>., 2009</xref>).</p>
				<p>Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis with a worldwide distribution, affects many species of mammals, including livestock, causing clinical signs of acute character in animals of all ages and productive stages, which significantly affects animal production. The annual incidence of this zoonosis in humans is not well determined due to sub-notification; it is estimated as an example in Uruguay, which is 15 per 100,000 inhabitants. Human disease seems to be associated with infected animals, as well as with rains and floods in endemic regions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">Zarantonelli <italic>et al.,</italic> 2018</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="conclusions">
				<title>CONCLUSIONS</title>
				<p>In general, the literature consulted allowed knowing the disease frequency and serovars found on horses. Exposure to different serovars may be related to the region in which equines are found, as well as the presence of one or more specific hosts for these serovars which act as a reservoir so that infection is presented. Horses are infected when they consume contaminated water with some leptospira species. While exposure to these agents is common in horses, systemic disease is rare, equines can be asymptomatic or present different clinical signs. Frequently reported leptospira species that can infect horses are, <italic>Leptospira bratislava</italic>, (11.43%, IC 95%: 6-19.1%) and with <italic>Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae</italic> (9.52%, IC 95%: 4.6-16.8%). It is necessary to consider in future studies, the investigation of animal leptospirosis impact in public, animal and environmental health, in order to implement geographically specific prevention and control programs of this disease.</p>
