Sustainability and climate change impact assessment: beekeeping sector, San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico

One of the biggest problems facing humanity is climate change, which has led to the adoption of sustainable strategies. However, these have not been effective in reducing CO₂ emissions, which continue to increase. The study aims to assess the sustainability and the impact on climate change of the beekeeping sector of San Blas, Nayarit, based on a holistic and systemic approach to sustainable development, in order to determine strategies that contribute to decision-making to reduce its impact on climate change. To achieve the objective, the framework of sustainable beekeeping indicators was determined; the indicators were evaluated through an interview-survey and; CO₂ emissions from beekeepers' movements and the geographical origin of the most commonly used inputs were determined. The results show that the beekeeping sector generated 0.010% CO₂emissions, which represents a minimal impact on climate change compared to other sectors in Nayarit. The transfer of beekeepers to apiaries represents 66% of the total emissions and the transfer of most commonly used inputs represents 34%. Finally, 8 strategies are proposed: economic (1), social (2), environmental (2) and cultural (3).
